Tijdens Wereldoorlog I vlucht Jules Schmalzigaug naar Nederland. Hij blijft er schilderen en komt er in contact met Georges Vantongerloo en Rik Wouters. De futuristische toets is in dit werk 'Zicht op Delft' nog aanwezig. Niet lang daarna, maakt hij een einde aan zijn leven.
