This plaque is the last in the series issued by the Société Hollandaise-Belge des Amis de la Médaille d'Art. The society subsequently split into a Dutch and a Belgian section. The medal commemorates the suffering, both physical and mental, of the Belgian population during World War I and praises the strength to persevere until victory. This is evident on the reverse with a verse by the poet Valère Gilles. The obverse depicts an older man and a little girl, perhaps a grandfather with his granddaughter, sitting close together on a bench. The grandfather points to the rising sun in the horizon.
