The writer Cyriel Buysse was born in Nevele in 1859. An exceptional place in his career as a writer is occupied by the play "Het Gezin van Paemel" (The Paemel Family), a social drama that stems from his sense of justice and his love and compassion for the humble and the downtrodden. Geo Verbanck designed this plaque by order of the city of Ghent on the occasion of Buysse's 70th birthday in 1929. Buysse received this portrait medal, executed in silver, during a special homage. A limited number of plaques in bronze could be ordered by subscription. Verbanck also modelled a bust of Buysse (1930-F), which was donated to the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent by his widow.
