Frederick I became grand duke of Baden in 1856 and he married Louise Marie Elisabeth, princess of Prussia, the same year. This token was struck in 1906 to mark the couple's golden wedding anniversary. Two more commemorative coins were also issued that year depicting the honoured guests in the same way as on the medal. The firm BH Mayer that produced this piece was founded in 1897 by Rudolf Mayer's father, Bernard Heinrich. The firm received the "Order of the Lion of Zaeringen" from the Grand Duke in 1902. This large medal for the wedding anniversary exists in silver and bronze, and there is also a smaller version in silver and gilt silver. Rudolf Mayer also engraved another version of the medal for this occasion.
