The literary works illustrated by Félicien Rops form a true pantheon of symbolic literature. The artist made illustrations for texts, among others, by Charles Baudelaire, Stéphane Mallarmé, Paul Verlaine and his Belgian friend, Théo Hannon. Rops also designed the frontispiece for the collection of poems, Les Epaves by Baudelaire in 1866. The central theme of the composition is the tree of life nourished by the seven deadly sins. With this piece, the artist introduced the theme of the skeleton to his oeuvre for the first time.
