Gustave Van de Woestyne, who had been a symbolist painter in the First Latem group before the war, was not impervious to Modernism and gradually incorporated expressionist and post-cubist stylistic elements into his work. Fugue, from 1925, is one of his most expressionist works. The musical title refers to the multiple voices in the composition. In the centre is the farmer surrounded by the elements that determine and make up his life, namely the house, church, animals and nature. The forms have been greatly simplified and reduced to large contrasting areas of colour in a collage-like construction.
