Alphonse De Witte was a passionate art lover and numismatist. In 1885, he became a member of the "Société Royale Belge de Numismatique" and vice-president in 1912. Because of his passion for art medals, he was the initiator and inspirer of the great medal salons during the World Exhibitions inBrussels in 1910 and Ghent in 1913. Together with de Dompierre de Chauffepié, chief curator of the Penningkabinet in The Hague, he founded the Société Hollandaise-Belge des Amis de la Médaille d'Art in Brussels in 1901. De Witte was a close friend of Godfried Devreese, whom he commissioned in 1902 to realise this portrait medal in cast bronze on the occasion of New Year.
