The Absinthe Drinker from 1907 is an especially valuable acquisition for the MSK, which already has in its possession a small collection of paintings and drawings by Spilliaert. Spilliaert was a protagonist of Symbolism in Belgium. In the work of the Ostend symbolist, female figures that are represented frontally are rare. The painting is congruent with his series of self-portraits. The work measures 105 by 77 centimetres and combines various techniques: aquarelle, Chinese ink and coloured pencil on paper.
The Heritage Fund of the King Baudouin Foundation purchases works of art to be placed at the disposal of museums. The Heritage Fund has collected some 7.000 works of art and 6 archives. All works are made accessible for the public in more than 20 museums and public institutions in Belgium.
