He exhibited anonymously and signed with a palette of colours and brushes on a black square. The salon catalogue of 1808 states: “Après la Conclusion de la Paix entre l’Angleterre et l’Espagne, à laquelle Rubens avait beaucoup contribué Charles premier voulut lui donner un témoignage éclatant d’estime et de faveur. Il se fit présenter le Peintre négociateur en plein Parlement, le décora d’un cordon enrichi de diamans (sic), l’arma chevalier et lui donna l’épée avec laquelle il avait fait la cérémonie”.
