The catalogue of the Salon of 1838 mentions: The Infants Albert and Isabella go to see The Descent from the Cross in Rubens' studio, accompanied by the Mayor of Antwerp, Nicholas Rockox, and other people. The painter, suffering from foot drop, is seated next to the painting in his wheelchair; some of his pupils are seated behind him at his side.
