A young man stands beside a basket and jug at the edge of a lake, bending slightly forward over a fishing line. To the right is a tree under which a trap lies. The four-line French caption reports that one can see that the fisherman has thrown out his fishing rod, but not what he is fishing for with it. Fishing was a widespread symbol of amorous activity, based on the notion of the unreliable bait. The trap here represents the trap of love.
