At Bethel, in the middle of a hilly landscape with a river, God reveals himself to Jacob. He gives Jacob the name Israel and promises him the land of Abraham and Isaac. Jacob then erects an altar and consecrates it by pouring oil on it (Gen 35:14). A tetragram here replaces the image of God the Father.
