Prince Charles was born on 10 October 1903, the second son of King Albert I. He was the younger brother of King Leopold III. Prince Charles was born on 10 October 1903, the second son of King Albert I. He was the younger brother of King Leopold III. Due to the latter's absence, Charles was elected regent of Belgium on 20 September 1944. He would remain so until 20 July 1950. After the turbulent royal issue, Baudouin finally became the new king of Belgium on 1 August 1950. After his regency, Prince Charles retired to his villa in Raversijde near Ostend and devoted himself to drawing and painting. He died in Ostend on 1 June 1983.
