The gouache was a means of expression in its own right for Ossip Zadkine. This village scene was most likely produced in Caylus, in the Tarn-et-Garonne, where the artist regularly stayed from 1921 in the company of his wife, Valentine Prax. Patrons such as André De Ridder, Walter Schwarzenberg and Paul-Gustave Van Hecke exhibited his work in their galleries and emphasised the artist’s creations in their publications.
