The kinship with Baertsoen's melancholic canal views is evident in Bytebier's predilection for 'banal', not very picturesque city corners, the sought-after perspective, the attention to reflection and the sketchy representation of bank elements in the water, the subdued colour and the use of only a few light sources that give the whole a fairy-like atmosphere.
