Thévenet preferred to paint domestic interiors, which he presented in all their simplicity from a poetic and intimist vision. In Belgium, this kind of iconography was quite unusual. In those days, interiors lagged far behind sunny landscapes and the sober depiction of everyday things was considered primitive. What particularly attracted Thévenet to these objects was the fact that they enabled him to play with geometric shapes and coloured surfaces. A work by Thévenet was never merely a representation of a well-defined interior. The composition was always well-considered with attention to a balanced structure and a harmonious colour range with sometimes sharp tones. He did not care about perspective and proportional accuracy. If the composition demanded it, objects and/or parts of them were made larger or smaller. All these characteristics are also present in "Kitchen Interior", painted in 1907.
