Like Gustave De Smet and Frits Van den Berghe, Constant Permeke’s early work was impressionistic. The use of colour and the evocative brushwork in this view of the dunes reminds us of this period. However, the powerful technique and the use of the subject matter as a means of expression and as a constructive element, the simplified shapes and impulsive style of painting, which were all very characteristic of Permeke’s later impressionistic work, are already present in this small, simple study.
