A funfair is in full swing in a broad village street. To the left and right are houses, mostly with thatched roofs. The horizon line is low, creating an expansive area of sky. Numerous partygoers, working farmers and townspeople are scattered throughout the painting. The most distinguished company consists of the officer standing in the middle, his colleague seated next to him, also with a moustache and goatee, and their beautifully dressed female companion. Two couples can be seen to the right of the officer, one standing and the other sitting. The seated husband surreptitiously puts his left hand up the woman’s skirt.
