Copy after the oil sketch by Rubens (inv. 1919-Z), which is also kept in the MSK Gent, a modello for the great Flagellation (1614) in Saint Paul's Church in Antwerp. The importance of the drawing lies in the fact that the depiction to the right is more complete than that of the oil sketch. According to J. Held (1980), this suggests that Rubens's modello was originally larger, but was later narrowed down, perhaps to bring the representation into line with the large painting.
