In this sketch, Théo van Rysselberghe portrayed his friend Armand Heins while he was painting in his garden. Armand Heins was a critic, illustrator and artist, and was also intensively engaged in preserving monuments. Among other things, he made hundreds of lithographs and drawings that brought medieval Ghent, which had largely disappeared, back to life.
