Alexander Adriaenssen was a contemporary and friend of Rubens. He was widely appreciated as a fine still life painter. This showcase still life is signed and dated 1647 on the bottom left of the table leg. It is one of the master’s most opulent compositions. The clear colour harmonies and the subtle play of light on the food, glass and silver are quite remarkable. The elegant wineglass with its high, ornate stem next to the earthenware jug is a piece of Venetian glassware. The decorative cup featured in the painting is a German columbine cup.
