The twenty-fifth anniversary of Leopold I's accession to the throne was celebrated with great pomp throughout the country in 1856. The monarch was enthusiastically received in all parts of the country and the event was remembered in numerous medals struck for the occasion. For this medal, Leopold Wiener had only managed to get the obverse stamped with the portrait of Leopold I by 21 July, so he was forced to use a provisional stamp with the coats of arms of the nine provinces of the empire for the reverse.
