The subject of the Virgin and Child seated on a throne in an architectural niche and surrounded by saints and musician angels was very popular in Florence, especially for large altarpieces. It was rarely used for smaller works such as religious works for domestic use. Its simplicity of style and somewhat archaic execution, suggest that this panel was probably an early work by Biagio di Antonio. His later work shows greater sophistication, with more realistic figures placed in a pastoral landscape.
