Her mother had studied at Yale University and insisted that all her children receive a solid education. Idea, along with her brother, went to study in Chicago. After her studies, she became a promising art student, but she abandoned her ambitions after her marriage to Willam Andrew Hammond. She was known as a very artistic, resourceful and determined, charismatic woman.
