He exhibited anonymously and signed the motto: S'occuper c'est savoir jouir / L'oisiveté pèse et tourmente / L'âme est un feu qu'il faut nourrir / Et qui s'éteint s'il ne s'augmente. The Salon catalogue of 1812 mentions: Auguste assis sur un trône, écoute avec émotion le récit que lui fait Virgile de son poëme; Octavie en est tellement émue quelle [sic] tombe en défaillance; l'Empereur la soutient ainsi que Julie et une suivante; Mécénas est assis à côté du poète et deux autres figures par derrière; à gauche de Virgile est un groupe de trois figures; la statue de Rome triomphante décore le fond du salon.
