A Solomonic judgement signifies a wise decision in a difficult dispute. In the Bible story, King Solomon is asked to judge a disagreement between two women, who both claim to be the mother of a newborn baby. Solomon proposes to cut the baby in two, so each woman can have her half. To spare her child’s life, the real mother is prepared to give the baby to her rival. She hereby reveals herself as the true mother and wins the dispute. This painting by Gaspar de Crayer once hung at the Counts Castle in Ghent, in a room where court cases were heard and deliberated.
