In his inimitable and remarkably deft drawing style, Evenepoel depicts here a French cuirassier, a cavalry soldier, shown in two poses, each time wearing the gold-colored helmet adorned with red plumes characteristic of his regiment. The cuirassier on the right holds the soldier’s equally distinctive weapon, a pallasch or thrusting sabre, a weapon with a straight blade. As is often the case with Evenepoel, the drawing can be related to a painting, Sunday in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris (1899, Belfius Art Collection).
