Edgard Tytgat made Quelques images de la vie d'un artiste (A few scenes from the life of an artist) in 1917, on the occasion of the death of his friend Rik Wouters the previous year. Tytgat described and depicted his memories of their friendship in a gripping story; in the prospectus for the edition he stated: 'I will try to make this book into a relic'. The printed cover contains nineteen double-folded sheets of which only the inside is used. On the first sheet is the double portrait of Rik and Nel Wouters, on the next double-folded sheet on the right a flower vignette and on the left Tytgat's self-portrait. Then the story begins, consisting of sixteen consecutive pages with the text on the left and the colour woodcut on the right. The book was written in London and rolled off Tytgat's own press, 'la presse de l'imagier', in an edition of 40 copies. It is Tytgat's first woodcut album.
