In addition to his self portraits, Léon Spilliaert also created a remarkable array of images of interiors between 1907 and 1908. These works include objects that the artist also incorporated within his self portraits. The second of November (Interior) from 1908 harks back to a self portrait made in the same year (private collection). In both pictures the calendar on the wall is dated the second, which leads us to believe that they must have been painted almost simultaneously. The rigid, cool interior of The second of November (Interior) exudes a sombre atmosphere, which could be due to the fact that it is All Souls day. Spilliaert incorporated a mirror into the picture, an idea he often used, which is a symbol for self observation.
