Louis Artan played an important role in the development of Belgian seascape painting. He broke away from the artificial methods of working of his predecessors and with an open view studied the North Sea in all its facets. He attached great importance to painting outdoors and constantly attempted to depict the ever-changing nature of the sea. He also preferred sombre seascapes under skies filled with dark clouds. The North Sea at Blankenberge illustrates this study of the atmospheric effects of nature.
