The Italian Renaissance painter Titian is lying in state on the terrace of a Venetian palace. In the background you can see his altarpiece depicting the Assumption of Mary. In this dramatised scene, Robert-Fleury mainly wanted to highlight Titian’s fame and wealth. The young servant in the foreground emphasises Titian's status.
