James Ensor produced many self-portraits. They are the connecting theme in his oeuvre. The artist made over sixty painted, drawn and printed self-portraits. As well as using mirrors he often used photographs. In addition, to produce these Ensor also incorporated his own image into a lot of other compositions. We meet the artist throughout his oeuvre as Arab, Christ, Pierrot, insect or herring, burlesque hooligan, carnival chap or skeleton, either with or without the company of friend and foe.
