Flemish Primitives | Worldview: The City portrayed

The advent of an opulent Flemish art in the 15th Century runs parellel to the flourish of wealthy, commercial urban centres.

The urban feel dominated the regional and national affinities. In the cities, the churches, town halls and guild houses function as symbols of an urban prestige and similar well-being. From this pride, the Flemish cityviews are integrated into painting. Thus, Bible stories and a number of legends are enacted in the landscapes with frequently recognisable Flemish cities and/or buildings in the background.
